What is a Superfood?
You may have heard the phrase superfood tossed around in the health food world but what exactly is it? Does it give you special powers? Will it make you big and strong? Well it will not make you the next Avenger but it can help your body strengthen and become healthier. Though there is no legal or medical definition, superfoods are nutrient powerhouses that pack large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. Eating them may reduce the risk of chronic disease, and prolong life, and people who eat more of them are said to be healthier than most.
Below are some everyday superfoods that you can add to your diet and why.
Tomatoes contain high amounts of potassium, fiber and vitamin C. Tomatoes also contain lycopene which is an antioxidant rarely found in other foods. Adding tomatoes to your salad at lunch or on a piece of toast in the morning is an easy way to add to your diet.
Blueberries are full of phytonutrients that neutralize free radicals that cause aging and damages cells. The antioxidants in the blueberry may also protect you against cancer and may reduce the chance of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids, which the body cannot produce by itself. These fatty acids may reduce inflammation, improve circulation, increase the ratio of good to bad cholesterol, and may slash cancer risk. Salmon is a rich source of selenium, which helps prevent cell damage, and several B vitamins. Having smoked salmon for dinner does not sound like a bad idea.
Kale is to be believed that the phytonutrients in kale trigger the liver to produce enzymes that neutralize potentially cancer-causing substances. Kale contains a type of phytonutrient that appears to lessen the occurrence of a wide variety of cancers, including breast and ovarian. So why not eat more kale salads?
Black Beans are full of fiber! A cup of black beans packs 15 grams of protein, with none of the artery-clogging saturated fat found in meat. They can be added to your favorite taco, burrito or pretty much anything you want. Some prefer to just eat them alone.
Oats are super because they are full of fiber. Oats are also a rich source of magnesium, potassium, and phytonutrients. They contain a special type of fiber that helps to lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease. You can even make a tasty treat such as oatmeal cookies to get your daily dose!
