Avocados To Guacamole And Still Healthy


This Friday, May 5th, some may be celebrating the popular Cinco de Mayo! Those who celebrate this holiday do so by drinking margaritas and indulging in tacos, guacamole and much more.  Guacamole may look like baby food but if prepared right it can be a very tasty treat. Guacamole’s main ingredient is avocados, which are known to be healthy and packed with some good fats as well.  While preparing your guacamole, here are some tips about avocados.

First make sure your avocado is ripe. Ripe Hass avocados that yield to gentle pressure should be eaten within a day or two. For events a couple days out, purchase firm avocados instead. Unripe, firm or green fruit can take four to five days to ripen at room temperature, perfect for celebrations that are a few days out. Some say if you want to help the avocado to ripen quicker, then you can put it in a bag overnight with a banana.

Now you want to make sure the avocado is still good to eat. Cut open the avocado with a knife. If it’s dark green near the skin and pale green near the stone, it’s ripe. But if the meat is separated, stringy, and brown or black, it’s rotten.

After you decide how you want to prepare your avocado, it is time to eat it.  Here are a couple benefits you will gain by eating avocados:

Guacamole is good for you, no matter which way you slice it.
